Ever Striving

About a year before I got married I started deeply pondering Proverbs 31. I had no idea that I would soon be a wife, but whether a woman is single or married affects the ideals of this Proverb very little. The single woman can just as well emulate the behaviors of the Proverbs 31 woman substituting the various family roles with the church family or her area of called ministry.

I have read only one book on Proverbs 31: Nancy Wilson's Praise Her in the Gates..

I'm interested in finding more books on Proverbs 31 that are good--I have found a lot of titles, but many of them sound like comedic stories of various failures to live up to Proverbs 31. So, if you know of any, please point the way...

Also interested in knowing of any Christian women's organizations that use Proverbs 31 in their mission statement in any way...

I just read a book, not on Proverbs 31, but a great book anyway..."The Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands" by Dr. Laura Schlessinger. She mentions Proverbs 31 a few times, and overall, it's just a great book. Megan owns it, but Edie has it right now.

I like Stepping Heavenward by Elizabeth Prentiss (from the 1800s). I try to read it every other year or so---it is both convicting and encouraging. You are welcome to borrow it and any others on our shelf (The Excellent Wife and Nancy Wilson's The Fruit of Her Hands to name two more). Also, the church library has a copy of Prentiss' book, and it's never been checked out--a literary crime!

Kelly--I bought the Care & Feeding in Kauai for the plane ride home. You're right; it is really good.

Kristin--I have heard of Prentiss and will make it a point to be the first to check it out at PPC! I haven't read the other two yet either and will be sure to check those out as well!

I heart our church.

Mrs. J, check out anything you can find on this by Ellen Davis, professor of OT at Duke. It would surely be amazing. She's one of the most beautiful and happily married Prov scholars I can imagine.
