I knew before coming here that this part of the world is famous for its rainbows due to the small rainclouds in the sunny desert sky, but I never thought they could be so timely.
This one is a bit hard to see, but it's important to me. I saw it about a year ago. I was in a mood, and angry, and on the verge of tears. So uncertain about my future. So bewildered at where God had put me to work. So far from my family and my Midwest.
My roommate asked me if I could help with the yardwork. That was the last thing I wanted to do. But you don't really refuse that kind of thing, so I carried my grouchiness out to the yard. For awhile I was silent. I raked and I carried and I weeded. I didn't want to talk. But my roommate happened to be a person who once worked for L'abri ministries, and one thing I've learned from her is that these people know how to get you to talk. And before I knew it I was sharing my fears and my small irritations and we were praying together and she comforted me. And then it started to rain, softly, and this rainbow came out. And I thanked the Lord for fellowship--not drinking coffee in the church lobby fellowship, but real fellowship: holding each other up.
So, when I saw this rainbow tonight in my photo library, I was thankful for my last roommate, and the roommates I've had before, each one who blessed me in her own way.
And for my present and lifelong "roommate," my husband and my best friend, who leads me out of my "moods" with Truth, prayer, and love.
The other night he took me salsa dancing. We stepped together in a courtyard filled with true Burque-town locals and over our heads a rainbow stretched across the sky.

Your conversation about rainbows reminded me of the last evening we had with our Christian friends in Freeport, Illinois - where a mother and daughter sang Friends Forever for us - a very moving experience as we were leaving dear friends to venture out into another phase of our lives - Freeport was a wonderful town and those years there were so special - a true Midwest experience where the events were the outdoor concerts every Sunday evening at a real bandshell, the merry -go-round, the waterfall in the park, wooded land and a stream for the kids to play in, the pop machine at the local fire station where they kids got a welcome soft drink in the heat of summer - the union dairy where the car would often go out of control for a stop at the ice cream shop, the drug store where one could still get a double vanilla malted and they knew you by name ..... I could go on..... But on that evening out under the skies, we saw a full complete rainbow which gave us such great assurance that the Lord was going before us - it was as if we had the burning bush before us. It was a special evening - I'll never forget it.
Glad you have a chance to show your brother New Mexico and Una - it could be quite a venture in the mountains with the puppy. I look forwqard to seeing the pictures.
Love,
MOM
The best thing about boy roomies is that they don't want to wear all your clothes.
